The Apostles Fast: Spiritual Renewal and Apostolic Tradition
The Apostles Fast, popularly known as Petrovski Post (Peter’s Fast), is one of the four major multi-day fasting periods in the Eastern Orthodox Church. This summer fast is dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, honoring their missionary labors, spiritual endurance, and ultimate sacrifice in spreading the Gospel.
A Fast of Variable Length Unlike other major fasts with fixed durations, the length of the Apostles Fast changes every year. It is a movable season because its start date depends entirely on the date of Pascha (Easter).
The Rule: The fast begins on the Monday immediately following All Saints Sunday (the week after Pentecost).
The End: It always concludes on the eve of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul (Petrovdan), which is celebrated on June 29 according to the Julian calendar (July 12 on the Gregorian calendar).
Duration: Depending on how early or late Easter falls, this fast can last anywhere from 8 to 42 days.
Dietary Rules: A Lighter Fast Dietarily, the Petrovski Post is generally considered less strict than Great Lent or the Dormition Fast. Orthodox Christians abstain from meat, poultry, dairy products, and eggs. However, fish, wine, and olive oil are permitted on most days—typically on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Wednesdays and Fridays remain strict fast days, where believers follow a plant-based diet without oil (fasting on water).
The True Meaning of the Fast Orthodox teachings emphasize that physical abstinence from certain foods is only one aspect of the fast. The ultimate goal of the Petrovski Post is spiritual purification. Believers are encouraged to focus heavily on:
Intensified personal and communal prayer.
Frequent confession and repentance.
Acts of charity and helping those in need.
Refraining from negative thoughts, harsh words, anger, and gossip.
By stepping back from worldly indulgences, Orthodox Christians look to the example of the Apostles—who famously prepared for their worldwide ministry through intense prayer and fasting—to strengthen their own faith and inner peace.
