M270=Armored, self-propelled barrel fire artillery system. The first systems of the M270 were received by the US Army in 1983. They have since appeared in the armaments of a number of NATO countries. To date, about 1,300 units of the system and more than 700,000 missiles have been developed in the United States and Europe. Production of the systems was completed in 2003, when the last batch was received by the Egyptian Army.
Creation history
In the 1970s, the Soviet Union had a clear advantage over missile artillery over US and NATO forces. Soviet tactics resulted in massive bombardment from salvo fire systems mounted on trucks, such as the BM-21, resulting in the saturation of the target area with thousands of missiles. Part of the missiles inevitably hit specific targets, which was accompanied by a strong psychological effect. In contrast, in order to save relatively more accuracy and ammunition, American artillerymen preferred Lullian artillery, which is why most of their missile artillery was obsolete equipment left over from World War II...The change in this attitude began in 1973, after the Yom Kippur War. Significant losses in spinal armaments, such as surface-to-air installations, occurred during this conflict as a result of Israels effective tactics of treating their deployment sites with salvo fire systems. At the same time, US military leaders realized that in the event of a war in Europe, a similar thing would happen on a large scale, prompting a call in March 1974 for a new missile device called the General Support Rocket System (GSRS). Its use was designed to destroy enemy air defense elements and for anti-artillery fire, releasing barrel artillery units to provide close fire support to ground forces. Consultations were held on this with other NATO member states, including the United Kingdom, France and West Germany, which were already working independently to establish a similar system. As a result, the American name Common Support Rocket System (GSRS) was changed to the European version Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), which corresponds to the Georgian Salvo Fire Reactive System
